I welcome the government’s announcement that the law on residential leasehold is to be reformed so that new houses cannot be sold with this tenure and flats will be dealt with by much fairer arrangements.
However, action is also needed to help those people who are being stung by the unfair terms of their lease now.
For too long local people who own their homes as leaseholders have been hit hard by the deeply unfair terms of their lease and this must stop. These residents often face dreadful exploitation by the finance companies that buy up these agreements from the original house builder and can levy extortionate charges on them.
Currently these leaseholders are unprotected from rip-off ground rent rises, unfair charges to carry out home alterations and staggering rises in the cost to purchase their freeholds. A clear Government plan is needed to provide the help that they need now. I also want to see action taken to help new and existing new build home-owners who are being entered into property management agreements often without their knowledge until it is too late and are then committed to paying management fees.
I will be campaigning alongside Warrington South home-owners who are affected by these issues. In Parliament, I have joined the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Leasehold Reform and my Labour colleagues and I have been calling for Government Ministers to take action.
